A South African woman has shared her experience – which she claims is tinged with racism – at Cape Town hotspot Chinchilla.

Lebohang Mosia, a film director and producer from Cape Town, tweeted about how she and her boyfriend were turned away from booking a table at the popular restaurant. This after her partner used his “real name”.

Lebohang then revealed that her boyfriend made another booking using the name “James Hunter”, which was immediately accepted.

“Guess where we’re having lunch LMAO”, she added of the Camps Bay venue.

Chinchilla was named among the “Top 25 Best Rooftop Bars in the World” by Time Out magazine.

‘RACIST’ CHINCHILLA EXPERIENCE

Lebohang’s tweet about Chinchilla caught the attention of Black Twitter who were shocked at her claims.

“I wish I was joking,” she added.

She continued to reveal how the restaurant’s manager attempted to “gaslight” her by claiming the whole issue was an “error”.

She tweeted: “Not management contacting my boyfriend to do damage control. They said ‘it was an error on their side’ and ‘they are truly sorry’… HA!”

She then posted receipts of a message sent my management in which they claim the booking mix-up was essentially a “misunderstanding”.

“They won’t get away with gaslighting my entire timeline”, she added.

Lebohang also hit back at criticism from tweeps that she chose to dine at the venue, despite knowing what she signed up for.

She fired back at fellow tweeps: “Stop telling me how and where to spend MY money. I’m here because I have the right to be. When we cower, we enable them. My form of protest is sharing my experience and taking up space. Period”.

MORE PATRONS SHARE EXPERIENCES

Lebohang is not the first person to reveal their disturbing experience at Chinchilla. According to tweeps and Google reviews, many more have had a taste of first hand racism.

One tweep shared: “Last week, I (table of 4) had booked one of the lounge seat areas but they put us on a normal table at the back. When we asked to move they said our party wasn’t big enough.. but there were smaller parties being seated thereEyesThey scrambled to correct it when we posted on IG”

Another added: “It was our worst experience in CP. Didn’t even last an hour there”.

“It seems they have a problem with black customers”, said a third tweep who screenshot several reviews from patrons.

A fourth tweep pointed out Kove Collection – who own Chinchilla and other CT hotspots – was also responsible for another unsavoury experience that went viral online.

This from a woman who claimed she was refused entry at Camps Bay restaurant Zenzero over her dress code.
