Why has Cheryl Cole decided to keep her ex-husband’s surname?

She divorced Ashley Cole eight years ago, but isn’t giving up the name any time soon.

Cheryl Cole has called time on her relationship with former One Direction star Liam Payne, after a whirlwind two-year relationship.

The couple even had a child named Bear together in 2017, but it seems the singers are no longer in perfect harmony with each other.

Why did Cheryl Cole and Liam Payne break up?

Cheryl Cole took to her Twitter account to break the news. There’s been no official reason for the split, but it comes during a time where their partnership had been under a fair bit of strain.

Cheryl Cole’s marriages and relationships

Any prospects of Liam and Cheryl getting married have been terminated. Which, is probably for the best, as the Newcastle-born songstress already has quite a few surnames.

She was born Cheryl Tweedy, before getting married for former Chelsea and England footballer Ashley Cole. She took his surname, but the pair divorced in 2010 after Mr Cole was caught cheating on his wife.

She then enjoyed the single life for a few years, before marrying French restauranteur Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini in 2014. When they divorced in 2016, she dropped the double-barrelled name, but didn’t go back to Tweedy.

Why does Cheryl still have the last name Cole?

She instead kept her “Cole” moniker. It’s a name she has been all too happy to keep hold of, despite the actions of her first husband. Speaking to Now Magazine four years ago, Cole explained why she’s sticking to her guns:

“That feels like the old me. Old old me. That would be like going backwards another stage, and why would I do that? And it doesn’t feel like his name. It feels like I own it. And I’ve built a lot of my life around it.”

She also joked about the fact she’d have to change her name on her passport. Which is as good of a reason as any. “Cole” is a lot more succinct that Tweedy-Fernandez-Versini, isn’t it?
