After Charlize Theron’s comments that the Afrikaans language is a “dying” one, many South Africans have come out to prove that they’re proud of their mother tongue.

And for one little girl, that meant adopting a new language.

LITTLE GIRL INSISTS SHE IS AFRIKAANS

In a clip posted on the Instagram page “Jou Afrikaans”, a little girl argues with her mother about changing her first language.

And according to the little girl – named Indya – is because her best friend Hailey is Afrikaans- speaking.

“I don’t want to be English,” the little girl complains to her mom. After failing to convince her mother that she knows the basic vocab of the language, Indya becomes more exacerbated.

“I still don’t think you’re Afrikaans”, the mom says. To which Indya responds: “I am, Afrikaans is Afrikaans”.

Hilariously, the Instagram page captioned the clip: “See Charlize, even English people want to be Afrikaans. Now there are proudly 45 speaking Afrikaans people”.

WHAT DID CHARLIZE SAY?

Last month, Charlize Theron made headlines around the world for her comments about Afrikaans. The comments were made in an interview with the podcast SmartLess.

Chatting to podcast hosts Sean Hayes, Jason Bateman, and Will Arnett, Charlize spoke about learning English when she moved to the US at the age of 19 years old.

She then claimed that she had to learn English “from scratch”.

And it seems whilst Charlize still speaks Afrikaans to her mother Gerda, it’s not a language she hears often. In comments that irked her home country, she added: “There’s about 44 people still speaking it. It’s definitely a dying language; it’s not a very helpful language.”

Charlize has yet to respond to the controversy.
