Mponegele Jane Thole has become an inspiration to thousands of South Africans after graduating and obtaining her degree despite her harsh living conditions. The single mother of four works as a domestic worker in Centurion near Pretoria but managed to pay for her fees, put food on the table and keep her four children well taken care of.

Speaking in a recent interview Thole revealed that she hopes to use her Bachelor of Arts in Health Sciences and Social Services degree from the University of South Africa (Unisa) to work as an industrial psychologist.

Domestic worker becomes graduate

Mponegele Jane Thole did not let her low income and circumstances stop her from pursuing her dreams to become a graduate.

And so the mother and four, originally from Thembisa, made this dream a reality.

Thole works around Centurion as a domestic worker earning around R3000 from three households where she splits her time.

Speaking to Briefly News, Thole revealed that she had always wanted to provide a better life for her four children and so she made the decision to further her education with no outside help besides some food handouts from one of her three employers Adele.

Doing what she can with the little she has

“I am so happy to have obtained my qualification because I never thought I would get to this point, especially with the job I am doing as a domestic worker and needing to take care of the kids, pay rent, buy food, and pay Unisa with the small salary I earn,” she tells the publication.

While she admits it took a lot of hard work, she credits God for getting her through it successfully.

She says now that she has her bachelors, she hopes to get accepted at Unisa to pursue her honours degree next year.
