With his charm and gift of the gab, Thabo Bester has been duping the public for years into thinking he is a hotshot businessman. And it seems celebrities themselves were none the wiser…

According to actor Tumisho Masha, he was also conned into thinking Bester was “sincere.” The screen star shared his first-hand account with the man dubbed the “Facebook Rapist” in an interview with Drum magazine.

In May 2022, Bester – convicted of fraud, rape, and murder – allegedly faked his death and escaped prison. He is currently at large with his alleged accomplice; Dr Nandipha Magudumana.

Tumisho Masha reveals he had met Thabo Bester through another celebrity; actress and media personality Pearl Thusi.

Pearl had brought Bester to a prayer meeting hosted by singer-turned-preacher Kabelo Mabalane, and Tumisho quickly took the young man under his wing.

He told Drum magazine in 2013: “She [Pearl] spoke of how she had met him that evening and felt the need to help him. That evening we spoke to him and prayed with him.

“That’s when I decided that as someone who was older, I should try to help him. I invited him to do a mentorship with me. He didn’t seem arrogant at all; instead, he looked quite vulnerable, and he was soft-spoken and seemed sincere”.

But when the publication reached out to him of Bester’s crimes, Tumisho was not so forgiving. He added: “He’s the textbook definition of a psychopath. He must stay in prison for his entire sentence because he’s a danger to society. He’s a liar and it’s become so bad he believes his own lies”.

Tumisho Masha is not the only celebrity conned by Thabo Bester.

According to GroundUp, Bester – under an alleged accomplice – registered an event and production company called 21st Century Media in 2018. This, while he was imprisoned in Magaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein.

Bester – allegedly using the alias Tom Motsepe – told the public that he was based in New York. He also claimed that he was related to SA billionaire Patrice Motsepe.

The company held a grand launch party at Hilton Hotel in Sandton in June 2018, attended by celebs like Amanda du Pont and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Leading ladies Nomzamo Mbatha and Thabile Ngwato were MCs of the glamorous black-tie event.

In a video clip that has since gone viral, Nomzamo and Thabile sing happy birthday to “Tom,” who is seen laughing via a video link.

Later that year, Bester’s company organised the Women In Media Conference. The event had a star-studded line-up; Bonang Matheba was booked as the MC and US actresses Taraji P Henson and Halle Berry and singer Ashanti were advertised as speakers.

Local actress and media mogul Connie Ferguson and presenter Claire Mawisa were also billed to appear.

But things took a turn for the worst when the women were alerted to the scam a month before the event was to take place.

Meanwhile, actress Pearl Thusi came face to face with the Facebook Rapist in a chilling encounter. In 2012, a year after his sentencing, Pearl’s meeting with Thabo Bester made headlines.

In a police affidavit shown to Sunday World,  the star revealed how she had survived an attack by the convict.
