‘I’m the sista in the black dress’: Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis gave a shoutout to Woman2Woman, a local band that went viral in 2017.

Cape Town-based band Woman2Woman went viral in 2017 after their “Cape Flats” cover of Beyoncé’s emotional single, Irreplaceable from her album, B’Day, took the internet by storm. Taking to Instagram on Thursday 21 July, Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis gave the all-girl group a shoutout and her Hollywood colleagues were roaring with laughter.

Woman2Woman, made up of Lee van Rheede, Felicity Kiran and Anray Amansure, wowed Mzansi with their unique version of Beyoncé’s Irreplaceable in 2017. Their iconic performance on the  Expresso Morning Show has received more than one million views and snippets of it have gone viral on various social media platforms. 

How to Get Away with Murder star Viola Davis shared a clip of Woman2Woman’s performance captioning it: “Me talking to my anxiety and self-doubt… (I’m the sista in the black dress).”

The 55-year-old actress’ fans had a feeling that Thuso Mbedu, who stars in The Woman King alongside Davis, had something to do with the Instagram post.



Viola Davis released her memoir, Finding Me, on 26 April and described it as “a deep reflection, a promise and a love letter of sorts to self”. 

“As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination,” she said as per Harper Collins

 In the memoir, Davis discusses her humble beginnings, her mother’s abuse at the hands of her father and navigating the world as an actress. The talented actress also discusses her husband, ex-football player Julius Tennon. 

The memoir has received rave reviews and was listed as a number one bestseller by the New York Times.

The talented actress plays the lead role in Gine Prince-Bythewood’s upcoming epic film, The Woman King. Davis will star as the general of an army of women warriors. South African actress Thuso Mbedu plays Nawi, an ambitious recruit. 

The Woman King is set to be released on 16 September.
