Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng blasted after posting ‘provocative’ clip

Former UCT VC Mamokgethi Phakeng has faced a plethora of backlash after sharing a video which many have deemed inappropriate and provocative.

Former vice chancellor of the University of Cape Town Mamokgethi Phakeng is once again trending. This comes after she shared a boomerang video of herself swinging on a pole. Many who have watched the two second clip evidently think it is inappropriate and have made a number of obscene comments in the replies section.

As usual, Phakeng responded to some of the comments and basically said that she should be allowed to live her life and express herself the way she sees fit.

Mamokgethi Phakeng’s ‘inappropriate’ clip goes viral

Mamogkethi Phakeng is well known for ruffling feathers online.

The maths professor recently found herself going head to head with News24’s Adriaan Basson following his tweet about her dress sense and social media videos.

And now she is once again trending after sharing a boomerang video that was taken after her hike on Sunday morning.

In the clip, she swings on a signage pole and swings her legs in a manner many have deem provocative and inappropriate. Take a look at the clip below:

Mzansi has mixed reactions

The short video has gone viral as many discuss whether it is appropriate for her to be posting such provocative content — whether or not she meant for it to be provocative.

Many men headed to the comment section to make inappropriate comments about the clip while others lambasted her for vandalising public property.

“This is a mental illness, the worst part she is an adviser of Useless Cyril Ramaphosa, surely he will be shocked by her actions,” wrote one person.

Meanwhile, Phakeng has defended the clip and shared that she has a right to express herself.

“Bathi I must feel liberated from the shackles of societal mores; I must forge my own path and eschew the confining standards of ethicality. They also advise me to avert deviants who, in their lascivious fervor, desecrate a pure video showing excitement after a tough hike. They tell me they don’t expect me to post myself in church uniform to appease the likes of Dr Sunrise – who seek their gratification therein. Let’s all unfurl the banner of autonomy and live our lives the way see fit (and allow others to do the same). The world will be a much happier place,” she wrote.
