They may both be successful South African-born stars in their own right, but Trevor Noah is calling on Elon Musk to take a stand “for the people” following his Twitter takeover last week

The Daily Show host shared his thoughts about the Pretoria-born businessman’s new changes on the social media platform, which include promoting free speech and charging users a monthly fee for a blue tick verification.

In fact, Trevor – who hails from Soweto – is calling on Elon to heavily penalise “racists” who use the “n-word”.

ELON MUSK BECOMES TWITTER ‘CHIEF TWIT’

Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk quickly took to making changes on the popular platform after purchasing it for $44 billion

And first in line was firing dozens of Twitter employees, including the board, making himself sole director – or in his own words “Chief Twit”.

Then it was on to “restore free speech” and look into reversing penalties previously issued to tweeps.

Elon then dropped a bombshell – that he would be charging users $8 (R147) a month to continue their verified Twitter status.

New users could also pay the monthly fee to receive a “blue tick” – indicating a verified account. The verification status – predominantly for high-profile people – was previously free.

He tweeted on Tuesday 1 November: “Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bulls**t. Power to the people! Blue for $8/month”.

He added that the fee structure would be “a revenue stream to reward content creators”

TREVOR NOAH IS NOT IMPRESSED

Meanwhile, fellow South African Trevor Noah is not impressed with what is happening on Twitter.

According to the stand-up comedian, the use of the N-word surged by “500 %” following Elon Musk’s takeover last Thursday.

Trevor also had an issue with Elon’s claims that a verification fee would equal “equality”.

He said in an episode of The Daily Show: “If you’re trying to create equality on Twitter, why charge anyone to be verified? Just give everyone a blue checkmark then. Why are you charging people? It doesn’t make sense to offer it as ‘equality’ and then put a price on it”.

The host also clapped back at the amount of the blue tick feature.

He continued: “With eight dollars a month, you can subscribe to Netflix, you can get Paramount+, you can get Hulu… or you can pay so that people verify that they’re actually sh**ting on you. I think this $8-a-month thing is ridiculous”.

Trevor added that Elon should instead capitalise on “racist” tweeps.

He added: “If you ask me, if Elon Musk wants to make money from Twitter, what he should do [is], don’t charge people for blue checkmarks. Charge white people to say the N-word.

“Twitter will be the most profitable company in history. Racists will be taking out loans.”
