“Would you leave the room if someone is suicidal?”

This is the question asked by many Tweeps who watched rapper AKA’s tell-all interview with eNCA journalist Thembekile Mrototo that was broadcasted on The Bar Leader TV’s YouTube channel on Saturday 22 May.

‘Anele kind of threatened to kill herself’ – AKA

AKA stated that the argument between himself and Anele “Nelli” Tembe before her death on 11 April became too heated for him to handle, so he decided to “remove himself from the situation” by booking himself into another room.

When he realised he took her phone with him, he returned to their room and according to him, “Anele kind of threatened to kill herself, jump off the balcony…”

“I told myself it would be best if I remove myself from the situation, and I gathered my belongings and booked myself into another room, hoping things would calm down. It got worse, she took off her ring and threw it at me. I came back to the room because I had taken her phone. Things took a turn for the worse where Anele kind of threatened to kill herself, jump off the balcony.. she didn’t say it in those words though,” said AKA.

Tweeps wonder why AKA left the room at crucial moment

Tweeps seem to think AKA could have done more to save his late fiancée.

In reaction to his statement in the hard-hitting interview, Tweeps wondered why AKA, if he knew she was feeling suicidal at that moment, left the room to phone hotel security from the bathroom, leaving her alone in the room.

“AKA failed Nelli he should have done more to protect her from herself. You don’t hide in the bathroom when someone that unstable talk about taking her life. Worse she had previous attempts of suicide and had been admitted in a psychic hospital. He was meant to be a protector,” wrote @kagees111nw on Twitter.

“As soon as my wife says: “I’m going to jump from the balcony” We’re moving our asses to the ground floor. Rather that then me removing myself from the situation, booking another room allowing the odds of her jumping, especially after knowing her history. #AKAkhulume #AkaInterview,” wrote @ashleyopulent on Twitter.

“When Anele Threaten To Jump From 10th Floor, Maybe, Just Maybe AKA Should Have Opted To Move/Booked Both Of Them A Ground Floor Room And Not To Remove Himself From The Situation #AkaInterview #AKAkhulume,” wrote @nwayitelowalter on Twitter.

AKA also mentioned to Mrototo that he feels like he is undergoing a “trial by media”. This as a result of several publications publishing claims and allegations by various anonymous sources since Nelli plunged to her death from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel in Cape Town.

Some of the footage reported on, paint him in a negative light and has led to abuse claims against the award-winning rapper. An example is the video of him breaking down a door to get to a terrified Tembe that went viral.

Since the video and the abuse claims, as well as allegations of infidelity, has surfaced, AKA says he has been kept out of the loop regarding the inquest into Tembe’s death.

“What am I in the eyes of this inquest?” a clearly distraught AKA asked in the interview.

AKA also mentioned that his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child, DJ Zinhle, had also been interviewed by detectives. According to him, DJ Zinhle was questioned on whether AKA was abusive towards her during their relationship.

AKA then proceeded to say that he is not an abuser and that “we have to trust the process” of the inquest, hoping that “the truth will come out”.
