The news that The Masked Singer would be coming South African screens was met with joy but Tweeps are not happy about the fact that Idols judge Somizi Mhlongo would be joining the judging panel.

Somizi would be part of the ‘detective panel’ alongside, musician and chef J.Something, comedian Skhumba and Sithelo Shozi. Comedian  Mpho Popps will be the host of the show. Renowned jack of all trades Anele Mdoda is one of the producers of the show. This was confirmed by a statement that was released by the SABC.

What the tweeps say

The reason for this backlash against Somizi’s appointment  is because tweeps claim that they are tired of seeing Somizi on television. This along with the theme of the views expressed brought up the ‘open the industry’ argument.

The above comments express the general public’s frustration at the usage of the same personalities especially when there is so much talent emerging in the industry. There were some positive comments such as the one from (@Lindi_Kasi) who expressed that Somizi will never be out of a job because of his talent.

The logical thinking behind the appointment of the same faces would be the fact that it might gaurantee ratings. This is a formula that has not always worked well for certain shows.

What Somizi said

The show was introduced at a notable press conference. The Idols judge was queried as to how his position on The Masked Singer would be different from his judging role on Idols. He stated the following:
