South African artists Zakes Bantwini, Wouter Kellerman, and Nomcebo Zikode won a Grammy award for Best Global Music Performance for their collaboration song titled Bayethe in Los Angeles this past weekend, 5 February; Twitter users trolled Black Coffee for not congratulating his former friend despite their fallout over a decade ago.
Zakes Bantwini and Black Coffee used to keep Mzansi on their toes around 2009 during their come-up with banger hits such as Wasting My Time, JuJu and Take It All Off.
The music giants were close and eventually went their separate ways. According to Briefly, they have not collaborated in years because of their rumoured beef which was fueled by the politics in the competitive music business.
In 2021, after Zakes Bantwini dropped the hit song Osamo, TshisaLIVE reported that Black Coffee had shared that he would not be playing the song in his sets because it was just not his type of music. He followed up with a Tweet that read,
“Yeah, my musical reputation is based on what I like. It’s always been like that, and also, not all songs I like belong on my sets, but last I said in my initial tweet Osama is a fire tune.”
The music giants both received a Grammy; in 2022, Black Coffee was awarded the trophy at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, whilst Zakes Bantwini just bagged his a few days ago at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.
On 7 February, just two days after Zakes Bantwini announced he had won a Grammy, Black Coffee took to Twitter to share a picture of the late Ricky Rick. The Sidlukotini hitmaker died last year on 23 February, and Tweeps wondered why the We Dance Again hitmaker would Tweet about Ricky Rick instead of congratulating his former friend despite their fallout.
“Uthin ngo [what do you say about] Zakes,” @EthicalEnrich1 asked.
“Okay, Mr For Life. Iphi icongratulations yaka Zakes, mfana [where is Zake’s congratulations brother]?” @papiss_v2 asked.
“So you really didn’t congratulate @ZakesBantwiniSA on his Grammy 🤔?” @SandileCharles3 asked.

“Grootman, Zakes won. Did you see?” @ThaboMahlakoane asked.
“What about Zakes wena?” @lowkiblxck asked.
