South African billionaire Elon Musk has successfully achieved his goal of buying Twitter. The business mogul forked out a whopping $44 billion to make the social media network his and naturally sparked many reactions from social media users who wonder what the multi-billion dollar deal holds in store for the popular app.

Trevor Noah, a famous South African-born US-based comedian, just explained what the impact of Musk’s Twitter acquisition will be.

Trevor Noah discusses Elon Musk’s Twitter buy

Space X and Tesla founder Elon Musk has reportedly purchased social media application Twitter for a staggering $44 billion (R690 billion).

Over the last few weeks, Musk – who was born in Pretoria South Africa – has been going back and forth with Twitter but appears to have won the battle after sharing that he secured the funds needed to buy the app.

In the meantime, many social media users – Twitter users in particular – have wondered what it would mean once the multi-billion dollar deal goes through.

Luckily for them, Trevor Noah, the host of The Daily Show, has explained in an excerpt of the Comedy Central show, what the Twitter acquisition will mean.

According to Noah, he felt like Twitter was always going to give in to Elon Musk. He also added that he didn’t understand why Musk wanted to buy it.

Power, power, and more power

He did however say that it was “a very smart move”. This is because “wealthy men know the value of publishing platforms”.

He also explained that Twitter is very influential – and has helped movements such as Black Lives Matter and Arab Spring reach a global scale.

According to Noah, this “power” will now be in Musk’s hands.

“Before this, Jack Dorsey didn’t own Twitter,” explained Noah. “He had two percent of the shares, and even as CEO he still had to answer to the board, and the board still had to answer to shareholders, and Twitter itself still had to answer to the SEC.

“But now as a private company, it’s just Elon Musk. Yeah, everything that happens on Twitter from now on is up to him — and also whatever strain his weed guy gives him that day.”
