Tito Mboweni may be the former minister of finance, but like most South Africans these days, his life – particularly in the kitchen – has been affected by load shedding.

Amid stage six rolling blackouts courtesy of Eskom, Tito has had to contend with less-than-fresh produce and regular intervals during his cooking.

It all began when Tito Mboweni revealed his plans to “cook up a storm” on Friday evening.

Two hours later, the former Reserve Bank Governor shared a pic of his meal prep: a tray full of suspicious-looking meat pieces, as well as herbs, spices, and vegetables.

He tweeted: “We are good to go. Next steps are critical.”

Half an hour later, Tito had chopped up enough vegetables to supply a busy restaurant.

“Let the games begin,” he added.

But just as Tito was adding his ingredients into the pot at 22:00, a power outage struck, putting a damper on his culinary plans.

Fast forward more than 16 hours later, and Tito Mboweni shared an update that his electricity had finally resumed. He also excitedly revealed he was ready to resume cooking – with said suspicious meat pieces included.

Concerned that another outage may affect his cooking, Tito decided to quickly put together a side dish to his lamb curry/stew – a packet of spaghetti – which he boiled in a frying pan!

TWEEPS BLAME LOAD SHEDDING ON ‘ROTTEN MEAT’

While Tito Mboweni’s cooking raised a series of red flags and questions over his competence amongst his Twitter followers, the main concern was clearly over the quality of his meat.

And as Tito has yet to tweet a product of his “end product,” many tweeps made light of claims that he had fallen ill as a result.

Media personality Redi Tlhabi jumped in, adding: “You see what happens when you subject your stomach to late night eating and strange concoctions that you call ‘stew?’ Your tummy and eyes end up not seeing the difference between fresh and rotting meat.”
