South Africans were left feeling all sorts of perplexed after DJ Hlo won Ukhozi FM’s Song of The Year Award for 2021. This is mainly because not many people have heard of her or one of her songs. She has since spoken out about how winning the award has changed her life despite the backlash.

DJ Hlo speaks about her Ukhozi FM award

The question on many people’s lips for the last few days has been “who exactly is she” after hearing that DJ Hlo was the recipient of Ukhozi FM’s Song of the Year Award. The young DJ was announced as the winner on 31 December last year and this shocked many.

Ever since then, DJ Hlo has been trending as locals questioned how and why she won when no one knows her or her music. “We all went to sleep confused and woke up more confused,” wrote @Lithamsanqa after hearing the news.

‘Feels amazing’

She has since spoken to TshisaLive regarding her win:

“It feels amazing, regardless of the backlash. History has been made as the first female DJ to cross over the year, so it feels amazing. My social media has skyrocketed. My life just changed in a blink of an eye. This is huge for me,” she said.

“It’s hard to believe because I’ve been on this thing since 2020. I was in the top 10, I was number five. I’ve been campaigning everywhere to promote but I guess people will say whatever they want to say.”

The song in question is called Isibani and features DJ Manzo and Siboniso raked in 214,966 votes, the publication reports. Her numbers on YouTube, however, are much lower and have been scrutinised by many locals.
