The following South African rappers have managed to crack the code by securing their respective bags not only in music

It is said that building and maintaining success in the hip-hop industry whether local or international is never easy. The tricky part is once you have created a name for yourself how do you increase that 15 minutes of fame into two hours and still fattening your bank account.

There are a few rappers who can be considered not only household names, but also pioneers of sorts in both music and business, but locally we have a few artists who have turned the success of their time on the mic into a trip to the bank.

Cassper Nyovest: The diverse-deal signer

Most arguably one of the most commercially successful rappers in South Africa who first caught our attention with Doc Shebeleza . Cassper whose real name is Refiloe Phoolo has managed to create not only a business empire in his name but also build relationships with major brands

These brands include MTN which according to the Slikour on Life website was an innovation on its own. This paved the way for more business deals that allowed for Cassper to claim his place on the top of any ‘richest hip hop artists’ list.

AKA: Iconic beverage business deal

It would not be any type of hip-hop list without mentioning the late AKA whose real name is Kiernan Forbes. AKA’s biggest claim to fame might be his extensive list of hit singles but in 2016 he launched a collaboration with international vodka brand, Ciroc where he curated their watermelon flavour and then later the banana flavour.

This was remarkable because it was not only a brilliant partnership but it was an influencer move before the term become famous amongst Instagram. The deal might have ended in 2022 according to IOL because of Forbes desire to manufacture his own spirit, but it will forever be a game changer

Boity: From the screen to beauty and music deals

The stable of female rappers in South Africa might not be as large as compared to their male counterparts but when listing them you need to mention actress turned reality star turned rapper Boithumelo Thulo.

The entrance of Boity into the hip hop industry might have been met with ridicule but the critics were soon eating their words when she released her debut single Wuz Dat . A long list of hits followed with her own reality show Boity: Own your Throne. This gave viewers a glimpse into not only her life but the process behind her music. This was not the stop for her, as she managed to secure fragrance deals and even a hair range.
