South African choreographer and media personality Somizi Mhlongo jetted off to New York for a much-needed vacation after a rollercoaster of a year. The event organisers say they’ve had Somizi on their radar for three years.

Taking to Instagram Friday 26 November, Somizi expressed that he was eager to hit the Big Apple’s club scene. Before he headed home, the former Idols SA judge went to Le Bain at The Standard Hotel in High Line, New York to let his hair down.

Somizi got down to DJ Maphorisa and Tyler ICU’s Banyana sharing that the entertainment venue’s playlist was 90% South African.

“I’m so proud of my country,  the most gifted yet underrated country, but the world is feeling our hit. I’, at this club and they’re playing 90% South African music and the DJ is American. Now that must tell you how powerful we are.”

Somizi has bagged a gig as the host of the Voguish Marquee horse racing event is set to take place on Sunday 5 December. Due to COVID-19 regulations, the horse racing event will not feature any horses but attendees will still have an “off-track” experience.

The first Voguish Marquee horse racing event was hosted at Turfontein Racecourse in Johannesburg in 2019 but did not return the following year due to COVID-19. The event will take place at Mall of Africa in Midrand.

Voguish Marquee organiser Mohau Seema told City Press that Somizi has been on their radar for three years. The energetic media personality was chosen for the gig because of his humility and people skills amongst other things.

“He has a huge following and he aligns very well in terms of his lifestyle and how he was branded himself as a public figure,” said Seema.
