South African media personality Somizi Mhlongo revealed that he is putting his best foot forward and returning to the dancefloor, via an Instagram post on Thursday 16 September.

At the beginning of August, leaked audio clips between Somizi’s estranged husband, Mohale Motaung and the producers of Living The Dream With Somizi surfaced. In the audio clips Mohale claimed that his estranged husband physically and psychologically abused him.

The abuse allegations made against Somizi led to him having possibly the worst week of his life. Here is a timeline of how Somizi’s August began.

  • Sunday 1 August: A Sunday World report revealed Mohale Motaung had been physically abused by his husband.
  • Somizi responds to abuse allegations saying he has referred the matter to his legal team.
  • Monday 2 August: Audio clips between Mohale and the producers of Living The Dream With Somizi were leaked with three bombshell revelations.
  • Wednesday 4 August: SABC announces the media personality will “take some time off” his radio gig on Metro FM.
  • Friday 6 August: Multichoice announces the media personality will step down from his judge role on Idols SA until abuse allegations are resolved.
  • The media personality confirms divorce from Mohale, denies abuse and other allegations made against him.
  • Saturday 7 August: Mohale confirms divorce from his husband, affirms that he was in fact abused.

While the SABC and Multichoice announced his “time off” from Metro FM and Idols SA, neither of the companies disclosed how long the media personality would be away for. However, he confirmed his unemployment via a video on television presenter Lerato Kganyago’s Instagram story on Wednesday 8 September.

“This is what unemployment looks like,” uttered the media personality.

While Somizi Mhlongo is one of the richest South African celebrities, he is also a lover of the soft life. Therefore, he has to ensure he “secures the bag” to maintain his lifestyle. Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela reported that as the former Idols SA is a freelancer he would not have been getting paid for his time off from the radio station.

However, the media personality is taking it in his stride. He has gotten back to choreography. In a video shared to Instagram he is seen teaching a class full of students a dance routine.

“Day 1 of dance rehearsals after 2 years of taking a break from choreographing, it’s good to be back,” wrote Mhlongo on Instagram.

He also hosted a Dinner With Somizi Spring Edition buffet as well as hosting meet and greet events, where he already has sold out seats!

The media personality is pushing sales for his book I Am Not A Chef as well.
