It’s not often that an actor steps into the daunting role of playing a real-life hero, but Dev Patel acted to de-escalate a situation which was literally on a knife-edge.

The Slumdog Millionaire actor broke up a knife fight after it spiralled into a stabbing in Adelaide, Australia, on Monday 1 August.

Patel lives in Adelaide with his Australian girlfriend, actress Tilda Cobham-Hervey. The couple met on the set of his 2018 film, Hotel Mumbai.

‘Natural instinct’: Dev Patel breaks up knife fight

The actor and his friends reportedly witnessed a fight between a man and a woman outside a convenience store.

“Dev acted on his natural instinct to try and de-escalate the situation and break up the fight,” a spokesperson for Patel told 7News.

“The group was thankfully successful in doing so, and they remained on site to ensure that the police and eventually the ambulance arrived.”

Dev Patel: ‘No heroes’

The 32-year-old Glengowrie man was stabbed in the chest, but his injuries are not considered life-threatening. The 34-year-old woman was arrested at the scene.

In a statement, Patel’s team however said there are “no heroes in this situation”.

“Sadly this specific incident highlights a larger systemic issue of marginalised members of society not being treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
