South Africans are sympathising with Maria Mabaso — the mother of convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester — after revealing that her son is a product of rape.
Speaking to Eye Witness News (EWN) on Wednesday, 5 April, the 58-year-old mother of the country’s most-wanted man recalled the painful story of her rape ordeal in her teens.

Speaking to the news outlet, Mabaso said that she gave birth to Bester at the age of 17, revealing that he does not know his father.
Mabaso shared the sexual assault ordeal, which she says took place on her way back from visiting her sister with her cousin. The pair had missed the bus back home when they got a lift from a man who later allegedly raped her.

“He nearly killed me… but luckily, I did not die,” she explained.
Mabaso further shared that she raised Bester until he was one, thereafter, her mother requested to take him into her custody.

After her mother’s death, when Bester was a teen, the 58-year-old Mabaso said the last time she saw her son was when he was convicted of fraud in Wynberg in 2004 before being released into her custody.
Mabaso says she fears for her life. She also fears for her son’s life.

Following Mabaso’s heartbreaking interview, some social media users have expressed that they understand why Bester turned out the way he did.
“This reminds me of a study on trauma and how sometimes the trauma experienced by a pregnant woman gets transfered to the foetus that grows up to be a child with psychological and behavioural issues,” @marcia_breeze reacted.
“A product of rape who also became a rapist and murderer😱😱😱 talk about sins of the fathers,” @mandymatsihne said.
“Yoh sana, this thing was embedded in him,” @thembeka_ said.
