This week MultiChoice finally confirmed that the snippets shared on social media in the last week which set tongues wagging are actually of a local drama series titled Shaka Ilembe which is set to air in 2023.
The series is about the infamous Zulu king, Sgidi kaSenzangakhona, commonly known as King Shaka. BOMB Productions which created Isibaya, The Road, Isithembiso and House of Zwide is producing the series for MultiChoice.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE DRAMA SERIES
Set in the 1700s, Shaka Ilembe tells the story of the making of the iconic African king, Sgidi kaSenzangakhona with iterations from his early childhood through to adulthood.
The production has been six years in the making, consulting historians, academics and family descendants, including the late King Goodwill Zwelithini and Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
The two key actors playing Shaka are Lemogang Tsipa (adult king) and newcomer Ntando Zondi (young king).
The star-studded cast is headlined by Nomzamo Mbatha, who plays Queen Nandi, the revered mother of Shaka. So who are the rest of the actors cast for this historic series?
MEET THE ‘SHAKA ILEMBE’ CAST
- Nomzamo Mbatha is no stranger to our television screens. Having played the role of Thandeka in Isibaya and Moratiwa in Tell Me Sweet Something. She recently starred in Coming 2 America, her international debut. In late 2021 it was revealed that Mbatha is working alongside Bruce Willis in a new thriller titled Soul Assassin.
- Lemogang Tsipa is also no stranger. The actor and comedian appeared on Isithembiso, eKasi and The Road.
- The River and The Republic actor, Thembinkosi Mthembu will portray King Dingiswayo.
- Wiseman Mncube who currently plays Sbonelo on Uzalo will play the role of King Zwide. Mncube is well known for his other roles in eHostela, Gold Diggers, The Kingdom – Ukhakhayi
- TV personality, Ntando Duma landed herself the role of Bhibhi kaSompisi Ntuli.
