‘RHOWL’ DIRECTOR SPEAKS OUT ABOUT NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT THE HOUSEWIVES

Pascual Wakefield is no stranger to South African TV. You might even recognise his face from TV roles, including Die Byl season two, Fynskrif season one, and Die Spreeus.

For his most recent job, he stepped into the role of director for the very first season of the Real Housewives van die Wynlande. And although many viewers love the show, lots of negative comment and have flooded social media.

During a recent interview with SARIE.com, Pascual opened up about the hate, especially towards the women on the show.

“I am so proud of every woman and person involved in making this [‘RHOWL’] possible, and I am grateful that Red Pepper Pictures, as well as the entire crew, placed their confidence in me to lead this project,” he told the publication.

In a recent Instagram post, Pascual shared a behind-the-scenes video of a day on set during the filming of ‘RHOWL.’

And yes, he was worried about how the show would be perceived.

“Viewers are smart, critical, and unpredictable. You never really know beforehand whether they will resonate with the show. Sometimes they are accommodating and other times completely unreasonable,” Pascual told the publication. But even if just a small number of people enjoy the show, he will be happy, the director says.

Does the negative comment bother him?

“You can’t let the noise of negative comments get to you. It will drive you mad,” he explains.

And although he expected some negative comments, he did not expect the backlash to be so personal.

“I hoped people would salute these modern women for how outspoken, strong, and smart they are instead of breaking them down because they do not follow the archaic standards of ‘how a woman is supposed to be or should live.’ Perhaps in the next decade, who knows,” Pascual says.
