CORRUPTION SCANDAL

The Citizen reports that the alleged criminal syndicate is accused of a common purpose to deprive the South African Police Services (SAPS) of R47.3 million. The money was swindled through corruption, forgery, bribery and money laundering before and during the Fifa World Cup 2010.

The SAPS officials are accused of deliberately delaying the procuring of accommodation for SAPS members for the World Cup. In the wake of their decision, they later secured accommodation at inflated prices without following the proper procedure.

Five entities controlled and associated with Thoshan Panday were allegedly paid R47.3 by the South African Police Service. The NPA alleges that Panday was the mastermind of the criminal enterprise.

Moreover, reports have it that during that time, he had captured the police and influenced many decisions made by his police associates. The ongoing court case has since implicated several SAPS senior officials.
