Designer to the stars: Tributes pour in for Quiteria Kekana

‘You created masterpieces’: Celebrated fashion designer Quiteria Kekana passed away on Sunday 17 April following a short battle with cancer.

Local fashion designer Lebohang “Quiteria” Kekana passed away on Sunday 17 April after a short battle with cancer. The celebrated designer, who has dressed the likes of Beyoncé and Peal Modiadie, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Tributes have poured in from South African celebrities following Kekana’s passing.

KEKANA FAMILY MOURNS QUITERIA 

In a statement posted on Tuesday 19 April, the Kekana family announced that Quiteria Kekana passed away at his home in Melville, Johannesburg. 

“Quiteria leaves behind his son, his beloved parents, siblings, family and his puppy. The family humbly requests privacy, as they process the news. We ask that you please keep us in your prayers.”

“The Kekana family is deeply thankful for all the countless personal messages of love and support received thus far,” continued the statement. 

Funeral and memorial service details will be announced soon. 

TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR QUITERIA KEKANA 

Taking to Twitter, several South African celebrities and tweeps shared heartfelt messages following Quiteria’s passing. 

Television presenter Lalla Hirayama wrote: “I had no idea about his cancer. This is heartbreaking. What a talented, kind, darling human. F*ck cancer.” 

Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela wrote: “I would always go to Quiteria and say’I want the craziest coat you have or can make in a day’. We didn’t always hit the mark but we had fun.”

Actress Makgofe Moagi wrote: “You put up a good fight my angel, may your beautiful soul Rest in Peace. You created masterpieces that made us feel regal and ethereal.”

STRONGER THAN CANCER 

Before his passing, the 38-year-old had partnered with the Brut and Blemished Foundation, a non-profit organisation on a campaign called Stronger Than Cancer. 

Speaking to TrueLove at the time, Kekana said: “The campaign seeks to raise awareness on cancer and will not only benefit me but will also [benefit] other people who need financial support when it comes to fighting cancer.”
