UNCLE WAFFLES: ‘VERIFIED GIRLS WORLDWIDE’

Uncle Waffles shot to fame after a video of her playing a DJ gig went viral on social media. Her high energy and smooth dance moves had been watched over 4.2 million times.

Since then Uncle Waffles has been the talk of the Twitter streets as Tweeps discussed whether she is successful because of her beauty. This sparked a conversation of pretty privilege on Twitter.

On 8 November, the 21-year-old announced that she got her blue tick on Twitter. The blue tick represents an account being verified.

“Verified girls worldwide,” she wrote on Twitter.

The process of becoming verified on social media was put in place for accounts of public interest to be labelled “authentic”. Therefore, the most famous celebrities and businesses often have a blue tick next to their name on social media.

PRINCE KAYBEE: ‘THEY DON’T VERIFY UPCOMING ARTISTS’

Following the news that Uncle Waffles is verified —  A Prince Kaybee fan questioned how the DJ, who has only been on the scene for two months got verified before the Club Controller hitmaker.

Prince Kaybee saw the tweet and responded with a sarcastic comment.

“They don’t verify upcoming artists…????,” he wrote on Twitter.

Prince Kaybee released his first album Better Days in 2015. Therefore he is not exactly an “upcoming artist” while Uncle Waffles on the other hand may be who he was hinting at.

DID DJ ZINHLE DEFEND UNCLE WAFFLES?

Uncle Waffles has since caught the attention of Canadian rapper Drake who followed her on Instagram. She also may have inspired a tweet by DJ Zinhle.

There was an ongoing conversation about pretty privilege and the way female DJs show off their bodies and dance seductively. Tweeps felt this was the reason for the success of some of the younger talent.

Around the same time, DJ Zinhle advised female DJs to stay true to themselves and dress however they like.

“Female DJs, perfect your art… don’t give them a reason to disrespect your work. Practice makes perfect. With that said, wear whatever you wanna wear & dance if it’s your thing… They are talking because you’re shaking the industry. It’s our time,” she wrote in a tweet.
