Uzalo actress Gugu Gumede has vowed to serve her late mother, Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi’s political party, the National Freedom Party (NFP).

The actress who plays the role of MaMlambo, on the country’s most-viewed soapie Uzalo, addressed a crowd of supporters at the party’s manifesto launch this past weekend (9 October).

She told the crowd in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal to not view her as the character she portrays on the SABC 1 soapie, but as a dedicated member of the NFP (National Freedom Party).

‘A FIGHTING SPIRIT’

“This is the party that was led by a leader without a single corruption mark against her, a true definition of a leader,” said the Uzalo actress.

Daily Sun reported that Gumede thanked the supporters for their loyalty even when the party could not contest the last local government election.

The publication reported that the party was disqualified from participating after failing to pay Independent Electoral Commission fees.

“Seeing you here really brings me so much joy and a lot of emotion.”

“I believe my mother left very early without seeing us getting back what we lost, when we were intentionally disqualified from the 2016 elections,”

She condemned the Zululand District Municipality for failing “to deliver basic services” and vowed that the NFP will do better should they be elected to lead.

Gumede also stated that her mother’s fighting spirit will carry the party through the elections from “the other side”.

BACKGROUND OF GUGU’S MOTHER

KaMagwaza-Msibi founded the NFP along with other former Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) members on 25 January 2011.

Msibi passed away in September from cardiac arrest and was buried a short while after two special category provincial funerals in Ulundi.

She served as a chairperson of the IFP after a lengthy career within the party, and was also the science and technology deputy minister between 2014 and 2019.
