American singer-songwriter Omarion has been the centre of an ongoing joke since November 2021. All over the world, netizens have referred to the new COVID-19 variant Omicron, as Omarion. The Ice Box hitmaker playfully addressed the “joke” stating that he is an artist, not a variant.

OMARION VS OMICRON

According to the World Health Organisation, the Omicron variant was first reported to them on Friday 24 November in South Africa. Since then, it has also been detected in other countries.

Netizens all over the world have poked fun at the new variant and purposefully renamed it, Omarion. There have been several memes circulating about the “variant”.

One tweep wrote: “Mfs calling ‘Omicron’ ‘Omarion’ go me crying. ‘I GOT THIS ICE BOX WHERE MY HEART USE TO BE.’”

One tweet that got over 26 000 likes on Twitter read: “Not the Omarion variant and the booster having a little tussle.”

‘I AM AN ARTIST NOT A VARIANT’

On 1 January, Omarion set the record straight on TikTok to inform netizens that there has been some “confusion” so his lawyers asked him to read a statement.

“This is Omarion. I am an artist, not a variant. So please be aware if you just so happen to run into me on the street, you don’t have to isolate for five days. Nor do you have to have a negative test result to dance to my music.”
