When GroundUp lifted the lid on the convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester’s prison escape in March, actor and presenter Moshe Ndiki defended the notorious criminal’s accomplice, Dr Nandipha Magudumana.

However, over a month later — and with the celebrity doctor facing a slew of charges, including murder — the former Gomora actor is eating humble pie.

The radio and TV personality said, in since-deleted tweets, claimed that the doctor was innocent and people should not lie about her name. Moshe also had back-and-forth arguments with social media users who were labelling the doctor guilty.

This came after it was revealed that Magudumana had been seeing Bester for some years in jail and presented herself as his “customary law wife” to collect his remains after he staged his death in a fire in May last year.

Bester — who is dubbed the “Facebook rapist” — was notorious for luring young women, raping and robbing them under the guise of lucrative modelling jobs. One of his victims, Nomfundo Tyhulu, a car saleswoman who sold him a BMW in 2011 in Sandton, and who later dated the Facebook rapist, lost her life after he stabbed her to death in Cape Town at a bed and breakfast. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2012.

MOSHE APOLOGISES

Moshe has since apologised and expressed that he regrets defending Magudumana.

The You Promised To Marry Me presenter said that he was ashamed for defending the doctor, also adding that she thanked him for it, saying she “sees God in him”.

MAGUDUMANA CHARGED WITH MURDER

On Thursday, 13 April, Bester and Magudumana were brought back to South Africa after they had been on the run for a month. The couple was arrested in Tanzania on 7 April about 10km from the Kenyan border. With them was a Mozambican national, Zacharia Alberto, who is believed to have been their driver.

While in Tanzania, the pair assumed new identities with Bester posing as an American citizen called William Kelly and Magudumana calling herself Martha Patience Mmerika Nitshini — a name she allegedly stole from anaesthesiologist Dr Pashy whose real name is Mmereka Patience Martha Ntshani.

Bester is currently detained at Kgosi Mampuru C-Max prison in Pretoria, while Magudumana is remanded in custody after her first appearance at the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Thursday.

National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola detailed Magudumana’s charges: “The charges Magudumana will be facing is the aiding and abetting the escape [of Thabo Bester]. She will also be facing murder for a number of bodies that we did find in her possession. Also, violation of bodies and also fraud charges.”

Magudumana will be back in court for her bail application proceeding on Monday, 17 April, with her father Zolile Cornelius Sekeleni. Sekeleni and a former G4S employee, Senohe Matsoara, face arson charges for the fire in Bester’s cell, defeating the administration of justice, and fraud.

In addition, they were charged with the murder of the unknown man initially believed to be Bester, whose charred body was found in his prison cell.
