Manchester United fans – particularly South African ones – are joking about their favourite team becoming “alive with possibilities” after Elon Musk tweeted about buying the club.

The Pretoria-born billionaire businessman – the richest man in the world – revealed that he would be buying the club in a tweet posted on Tuesday night.

Elon Musk’s tweet follows fellow South African Benni McCarthy’s role in the English Premier League club as first-team coach.

IS ELON MUSK BUYING MANCHESTER UNITED?

In a tweet that crashed Twitter, Elon Musk revealed he would be “buying Manchester United”

He added: “Your welcome”.

Needless to say, social media went into full meltdown mode over the news. But after leaving tweeps in a tizz, Elon Musk eventually set the record straight – insisting that the tweet was a “joke”.

Responding to a tweep who asked if he was being “serious”, he posted: “No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams”.

Elon added: “Although, if it were any team, it would be Man U. They were my fav team as a kid”. And the Twitter meme king – known for his less-than-serious tweets, added: “Standup is my side-hustle”.

According to the Independent, the Glazer family owns Manchester United, after purchasing the club in 2005 for a whopping $1 billion (R16,4  billion). Additionally, Forbes states that Manchester United is valued at around $4.6 billion (R75 billion) with a revenue of over $633 million (R10 billion) in the last year.

TWEEPS REACT IN DISBELIEF

Before confessing to his tweet being a joke, SA Manchester United fans were over the moon at Elon Musk’s announcement.

Some even asked him to buy local club Kaizer Chiefs – and even the whole of SA too!

@Boonzaaier92: “So Elon is about to join Benni in the 18 area at Man United?”

@ManUniting: “Elon, just imagine, we’ve signed Benni as the first SA coach and then you come through and revolutionise this club… SA takeover!”

@David_Mapheleba: “First Benni McCarthy and now Elon Musk. Man United might just be ‘Alive with Possibilities”

@BuddaGesh: “Please do it for us in South Africa we have alot in our plate – Manchester United is one of them”

@PabloMhlanga: “Can you also buy Kaizer Chiefs from South Africa, please Elon? The club has an equally rich history as Man U & continues to disappoint its supporters just like Man U”

@JohanReid4: “Elon please buy South Africa. All assets are dirt cheap. We are bottom of the log in math & science & IT education, healthcare & job creation. Our South African men’s football team is a national embarrassment. Our politicians are the worst. Only number one ranking is for corruption”
