Sir Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in the extremely popular Lord of the Rings movies, fell off a London stage during a fight scene in a play after tripping over stage props. The actor was hospitalised, but is recovering well.

Theatregoers in tears

Sir Ian McKellen, 85, screamed out in agony as he tripped over props and plunged off the stage during a West End performance on 17 June. A staff member rushed on stage to help him. Many of the shocked audience members were in tears as medics took the acting legend to hospital.

McKellen tumbled off the front of the stage in a ‘belly flop fashion’ just before the intermission of Player Kings at the Noël Coward theatre in London. Player Kings is a production of Shakespeare’s Henry IV Parts One and Two. It started its 12-week West End run in April. At first, audience members thought it was part of the performance, until the actor screamed out.

Theatre staff evacuated the audience members from the theatre at around 20:00 while medical personnel assisted the actor. Luckily, there were two doctors present in the audience who also assisted. The actor was hospitalised. The theatre consequently cancelled the show, according to Daily Mail. They also cancelled the next show, scheduled for 18 June.

Actor is recovering well

BBC reported that McKellen is in ‘good spirits’ after being hospitalised. A theatre spokesperson said that he had undergone a scan and medics said that they expect him to make a speedy and full recovery. If everything goes well, he will be back on stage on Wednesday, 19 June, for a matinee performance of the play.

Sir Ian McKellen: The legend

The stage and screen veteran is one of Britain’s most acclaimed Shakespearean actors, with roles including Richard III, Macbeth, and King Lear. However, his talents extent beyond Shakespearean roles. He is very well-known for his role as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings movies and played Magneto in the X-Men movies. This shows how versatile he is as an actor.

Definitely a legend, McKellen has been in over 60 feature films in a career that spans seven decades. He has won a Tony Award for Amadeus as well as several Olivier Awards. He has received nominations for two Academy Awards, five Emmys, and several BAFTA awards, according to The Associated Press.
