Musician and businesswoman Nomcebo Zikode recently visited the community of Tongaat (oThongathi), in KwaZulu-Natal, following a tornado that decimated the area on 3 June.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS) , over 7 000 households were affected in KZN following the devastating floods, with over six districts in the province suffering damage.

A total of 12 people died after the tornado hit, and damage costs are estimated at more than R1.3 billion.

In an Instagram post, the Jerusalema hitmaker shared that, through her foundation, she lent a helping hand to those displaced by the disruptive rain and heavy winds which wreaked havoc.

“Ngokuncane nami enginakho ngivakashele OThongathi [With the little that I have, I visited Tongaat] with @NomceboZikodeFoundation to those affected by the unfortunate tornado in Tongaat 💚💚💚 Let’s continue to support each other and spread kindness like wildfire, creating a brighter future for all, ” the songtress wrote.

A video she shared shows Nomcebo shopping for blankets, pillows and non-perishable food packs before making her way to the area to hand them out.

Speaking to ZiMoja about her visit, she said: “This disaster was very tragic. I felt it was important for us to come here promptly and lend a helping hand. It was very hard to not feel sorry for these people because they already don’t have it easy.”

The singer continued: “Seeing the beaming faces of the survivors has brought joy to her heart. “It’s really the small things that matter.”

Nomcebo’s humanitarian work does not go unnoticed.

The singer received an honorary medal from the Michael Jackson Heal The World Foundation. The organisation recognized her as an international icon in arts and culture, through her musical contribution.

She was also welcomed in the “Safe World Peace” organization as a prime example of a humanitarian who fosters philanthropic efforts through the Nomcebo Zikode Foundation.

“Thank you to the Michael Jackson Family Foundation for recognizing my craft. Michael Jackson was a legendary artist, so, to be identified by a family of such a man is truly inspiring to me. I’d also like to thank the Safe World Peace organization for gifting me with this necklace. I am very passionate about impacting communities, and I strive to do more,” said Nomcebo.
