Leanne Manas catches strays for ‘mispronouncing African names’

‘Why would someone who’s been reading African names for 19 years not learn the proper sounds,’ wrote a tweep about Leanne Manas.

For many years now Leanne Manas has graced our TVs as a news broadcaster. She is famous for delivering news on SABC 2’s Morning Live. While many have come to love Leanne and the work she does, some people have come out to complain about the way she pronounces African names.

According to a clearly aggrieved Twitter user, Leanne should have applied more effort to learn how to say the names of black people.

Leanne Manas is an esteemed news broadcaster who has worked in the industry for over 20 years.

The 44-year-old host of Morning Live is well respected in the entertainment industry but appears to have rubbed a certain Twitter user the wrong way.

Taking to the app, the user in question, @luthomaban, wrote:

“I was in primary school when Leanne Manas started with Morning Live.  To this day, she still mispronounces African names. That is peak idc because why would someone who’s been reading African names for 19 years not learn the proper sounds?”

“Some are just generally disinterested in learning and some have a lazy tongue, I had a teacher in high school Ms Michel sweetest loved black kids and was always our biggest defender in school she could not for the life in her click her tongue she would try so hard”

“Main reason our mothers and fathers were given names when they worked in the kitchens and gardens. Christian names were specifically for that reason,so they won’t be bothered with learning you native names. Our African names/heritage are thus disrespected deliberately.”
