Everyone gets a slice! SA baker creates life-sized Black Coffee cake

Limpopo-born cake maker and business owner, Kurhula Makhuvele, is known for her creative cakes inspired by everyday life objects. The talented cake maker recently made a life-sized cake of South African DJ Black Coffee, to celebrate his first-ever Grammy Award!The 84-layer Black Coffee cake is her tallest project yet.

KURHULA MAKHUVELE’S CAKE JOURNEY
Kurhula Makhuvele was born in Giyani, Limpopo and started cooking and baking at a young age. Speaking to IOL in 2020, Makhuvele said she was always baking for family events.
“I currently only bake cakes because that is the core product or service of my business and I would like to specialise in creative or realistic cakes.”
‘The slogan of my business is ‘It’s a piece of cake’, which implies that it is easy to make it and that what you are looking at is a piece of cake,” continued Makhuvele.
“People usually don’t believe that they are cakes. I have to show them the cut version for them to be convinced that all my work is cake.”
A LIFE-SIZED BLACK COFFEE CAKE
Makhuvele created a life-sized cake to honour Black Coffee following his historic Grammy win. The Drive hitmaker, who won the award for Best Dance/Electronic Album, became the first African DJ to win the prestigious award.
The chocolate Grammy Makhuvele created from scratch weighs 1.45 kgs and is 34cm tall. Taking to her Fine Bakes Facebook account on Tuesday 19 February, Makhuvele said her chocolate Grammy is slightly bigger than an actual Grammy Award.
The Black Coffee part of the cake is the tallest cake she has ever made. It weighs more than 100kgs and is two meters tall.

A picture of Makhuvele’s life-sized Black Coffee cake was reposted on Twitter by Kasi Economy and received several positive comments from Mzansi tweeps.
“It’s always nice to see unique achievements,” wrote one tweep.
“Do people know [how] hard it is to make such a cake? My sister really did a great job,” wrote another tweep.
“Everyone gets a slice of Grammy”.
