A stand-up comedian who made light out of Justin Bieber’s face paralysis has faced backlash over his “insensitive comments”

Munawar Faruqui of India courted controversy after comparing the pop singer’s medical condition to his country’s state of affairs.

On Saturday 11 June, Justin Bieber shared a video update with his fans on why he was pausing his Justice world tour. The 28-year-old celeb revealed that he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, which had affected the nerves in his face and ear. As a result, the right side of his face had suffered from a temporary paralysis.

Manuwar was seemingly referring to claims of corruption in the country. But many tweeps didn’t find the joke funny.

Here’s what tweeps had to say:

@tr_ind: “Such an insensitive comment on somebody’s health condition”

@KVBohra: “A little insensitive to compare Justin Bieber’s medical condition with what’s wrong in the world?”

@KundriiKiSundri: “Sorry… it’s not funny”

@NayanaAmol: “He’s using someone’s facial palsy for his humour. Illness is not a joke”

@imaryan_1828: “When you have no humour left and you connect two entirely different things!”

@__KAZINO: “ Using someone’s disability for comedy does not sit right + adding Indian politics into his dumb jokes, I don’t like!”
