“Desperate times call for desperate measures” – That’s the consensus from a viral video of DA leader John Steenhuisen dancing – or at least attempting to – to hit track  John Vuli Gate

The outspoken politician posted a clip of himself from his rally over the weekend where he entertained crowds with his moves – and campaigned for their votes…

Speaking to residents of Steve Tshwete municipality in Mpumalanga, John Steenhuisen played on the lyrics of the song to push his political agenda, stating that the DA would “vuli gate [open the gate] for a better future”.

He also promised to provide the residents with essential services, including water, houses and jobs.

He said alongside the video of him dancing: “Many of you know they call me ‘John Vuli Gate’. You know that song.. Let me tell you on the 1st of November I am going to be John Vuli Amanzi, John Vuli Pompo, John Vuli Khaya and John Vuli Imisebenzi.

“Together we are going to vula the Steve Tshwete municipality, we are going to vula the gate to put in [DA mayoral candidate] Bosman Grobler and we’re going to vula the gate to put a DA government in there. We’re going to vula the gate for all of you to have a better future because the DA gets things done.”

In another clip, the 45-year-old is seen dancing  on stage with several of his party candidates and associates to the song by amapiano duo Mapara a Jazz.

But whilst John Steenhuisen’s attempts at dancing received an epic fail, his efforts to entertain Mzansi – and social media users in particular – had him passing with flying colours.

Tweeps were both amused and annoyed…

“Politicians are so humble during elections. John Steinhuisen is even singing John Vuli Gate” posted one tweep.

Another added: “#JohnVuliGate if ever there is anything I enjoy in SA it’s diversity its fun and enjoyable”.

“This guy is disrespecting black people, when he visits white suburbs does he dance John Vul’gate?”, said one angry tweep.

jAnother added: “John…don’t vuli gate…fix the road”.

And celebs joined in the fun too, dragging John Steenhuisen for his lackluster performance.

Pearl Thusi tweeted: “This entire video is such a mess”.

DJ Sbu took a swipe at the politician’s promises – or lack thereof. “John Vuli Matrik Fail rate”, he commented.

Whilst Mmusi  Maimane delivered a low-blow. “Guilty feet got no rhythm”, he posted in a shady tweet.

He continued: “The people need delivery, not dances. Stop competing with uncle Waffles and Vinny.”
