Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl stylist spoke out about the infamous “wardrobe malfunction” in 2004, via an interview with Access Hollywood on Monday 22 November. 

LUKAS ON JANET’S ‘NIPPLEGATE’ SCANDAL: ‘I DON’T MALFUNCTION’

Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl stylist Wayne Scot Lukas says the infamous “wardrobe malfunction” was not his fault. In 2004, Justin Timberlake exposed Janet’s right breast on live television to an estimated 100 million people while performing at the SuperBowl halftime show. The incident was dubbed the “nipplegate” scandal which affected the singer’s career. 

Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson, a new documentary explores the “nipplegate” scandal. The documentary was released on Hulu and FX on 19 November. Lukas has since told Access Hollywood that the malfunction was not his fault.

“I was hired to do a job, I did exactly what I was supposed to do,” said Lukas. He went on to say that his job required him to have “snaps and pins and velcro” his client’s outfits so the outfit would stay together even during a quick-change.

Lukas went on to say that he would not hurt his “friend” Janet. He added that he did not like that Justin coined it a “wardrobe malfunction.”

“If I would’ve hurt my friend, I wouldn’t have worked with Janet for six years after the Super Bowl. I would have been fired that day,” he continued.

“[Just Timberlake] came off the stage and said, ‘It was just a little wardrobe malfunction. We all want to give you something to think about.’ He coined that phrase, and when he said that, I thought, friendship over,” he added. 

“Wardrobe malfunction? I don’t malfunction. I was a professional stylist. $10,000 a day back then. I can’t fail. Why did you say that?,” he went on to say.

JANET JACKSON WANTS NO PART OF THE DOCUMENTARY 

Lukas told Page Six that Janet wants no part of the documentary. 

“(Janet) wants that documentary to go away, she didn’t ask for a ‘Free Janet’ documentary. She’s not interested,” said Lukas to Page Six. 

The All For You hitmaker has her two-part film airing on A&E and Lifetime in January.

“They’re going to discuss it, and she’ll have her final say. I’m not privy to her final say, I just need to be aware of my story and I’ve been loyal for 18 years,” he added.
