‘Nonsense culture’: Iranian footballer faces possible execution

The global soccer players’ union, FIFPRO said that it is “shocked and sickened” by reports that Iranian footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani faces possible execution after campaigning for women’s rights and basic freedom in his country – via a tweet on 12 December.

IRANIAN FOOTBALLER FACES POSSIBLE EXECUTION FOR CAMPAIGNING WOMEN’S RIGHTS 

Amir Nasr-Azadani, an Iranian footballer faces the possibility of execution for campaigning for women’s rights and basic freedom.

According to CNN, he has been accused of being a member of an “armed group” that was involved in the death of three security officers during protests in the city of Esfahan in central Iran.

IRNA reports that Esfahan chief justice Asadullah Jafari said Nasr-Azadani had been charged with rioting against authorities. He has been in custody since 27 November but no sentence has been issued yet. 

The professional footballer’s sentence could carry the death penalty if proven that he used a firearm. If not, he would be sentenced to prison. Nasr-Azadani played for the Iranian professional football clubs Rah-Ahan, Tractor and Gol Reyhan.

GLOBAL SOCCER PLAYERS UNION REACTS 

FIFPRO, global soccer player’s union said that it is “shocked and sickened” by reports that Nasr-Azadani faces possible execution “after campaigning for women’s rights and basic freedom in his country”.

“We stand in solidarity with Amir and call for the immediate removal of his punishment,” said FIFPRO in a statement.

Tweeps slammed the country in the comments section of FIFPRO’s tweet labelling it a “nonsense culture” and asked the team to boycott.
