South Africans are demanding action against authorities – and particularly the Minister of Police Bheki Cele – amid continuous reports of brutal violence and rape of women and children.

And the latest stomach-turning incident – the brutal rape and assault of a granny in Ekurhuleni and police’s alleged subsequent dismissal of her attacker – is just another prime example.

MONEOA SLAMS POLICE AFTER GRANNY’S RAPE

Gender-based violence activists Women For Change shared the news of the gogo’s traumatic encounter on their Instagram page.

According to the NGO, the elderly woman was beaten and raped multiple times by a man she met at a local tuck shop in Palm Ridge. After the incident, the woman reported it to the police and was taken to a hospital for DNA evidence.

However, after realising that no action had been taken against her attacker, the woman was allegedly told by police to drop her charges against the man. Police then tried to coerce the woman with cash, KFC, and beer.

With SA hailed as the gender-based-violence capital of the world, the incident sadly comes as no surprise.

Singer Moneao – who alleges she was also a victim of GBV at the hands of her ex-partner – was one of the first to speak out about the incident.

She wrote in the comments section: “As heart-wrenching as it is to see these cases, it’s a reminder of the atrocities that our government has allowed to happen and possibly contributed to by continuing to choose to do nothing about the gross rate of crime in this country – especially crimes against women and children. Let’s remember to vote accordingly in the next election.”

Taking aim at the police, she continued: “What criminal is going to stop committing crimes when they know they can get away with it?

“The real problem is within law enforcement and the horrible government that chooses them.”

Other celebs like Amanda du Pont and Mogau Motlhatswi also spoke out against the attack.

‘CELE MUST GO’ PETITION

Meanwhile, a petition to have Bheki Cele removed from cabinet as the Minister of Police is fast gaining momentum.

Started by Ian Cameron of Action SA, the petition is titled “Cele Must Go”. It currently has over 130 000 signatures.

Cameron said in a recent media statement: “Everything Bheki Cele gets involved with becomes an abysmal failure. He should play absolutely no role in any form of government.”
