Gayton says the PA paid for Nathaniel Julies’ funeral – not AKA

‘We didn’t do this funeral to brag about the money we paid but we will also not be silent when lies are being peddled,’ said Gayton McKenzie.

Controversial party leader Gayton McKenzie just managed to ruffle a few feathers after claiming that his party — the Patriotic Alliance (PA) — paid most of the costs associated with the funeral of slain Eldorado Park teen Nathaniel Julies. This comes after an article published by a local publication that spoke to Nathaniel’s mother Briget Harris, stated late rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes paid R60k for the funeral which took place in 2020.

According to Gayton, however, the funeral cost way more than the R29k that AKA actually donated. He also added that the PA paid for everything else which costs hundreds of thousands.

Thousands of people celebrated late rapper Kiernan AKA Forbes after reading how the 35-year-old paid for the funeral of a coloured teenager who was shot by the South African police in August 2020.

Speaking to the Daily Sun last week, Nathaniel’s mother Briget praised AKA for paying over R60k towards her son’s funeral.

Gayton McKenzie however says that is false information.

According to the PA party leader, AKA only covered a fraction of the funeral cost.

A very annoyed leader

Taking to their official Facebook page, Gayton wrote:

“This story is becoming very tiring. Pls allow me to set the record straight. AKA graciously donated 29 thousand rands to the trust fund set up. The funeral cost ran into hundreds of thousand. We paid for the following: Coffin, Sound, and Clothes for whole family of Nathaniel and all the six kids of Bridgette

“Budgeted and prepared food for 25 thousand people. Paid a professional company to run the whole funeral. We also paid for the tombstone and food for the whole unveiling, we were told another party would do it but after seeing our hero’s grave falling in, we couldn’t do anything.

“We would do this again if given a choice because Nathaniel is a Hero. We detest the fact that we are being accused of lying when we say we paid for the funeral. We didn’t do this funeral to brag about the money we paid but we will also not be silent when lies are being peddled.”

Mzansi weighs in

While some commended the PA leader for setting the record straight, others wondered out loud why they would even bring the matter up as the nation is still mourning AKA who was brutally killed in Durban earlier this month.

One Facebooker wrote:

“This is so sad. The boy had the kind of funeral that people will be talking about for years to come. Clearly, lots of money was spent, so why would we now see these kinds of stories…”
