Months after an alleged scandalous affair between Springboks player Elton Jantjies and team dietician Zeenat Simjee, the South African Rugby Union (SARU) have issued a directive on romantic relationships in the workplace…

But while the body has warned that such incidents can create “conflict of interest, favouritism, and employee morale,” it has not entirely ruled out romances between teammates and colleagues.

According to Netwerk24, Saru’s policy on sexual and romantic relationships came into effect on 1 January 2023. This followed news of player Elton Jantjies confessing to having an affair with Springboks dietician last year.

In the policy, Saru warns employees of the complications of workplace romances.

“Romantic or sexual relationships between employees within an organisation can give rise to the perception of a serious conflict of interest and problems such as favouritism and affecting employee morale.

“Furthermore, it can also result in negative publicity for Saru and bring the union as well as the individual’s name into disrepute”.

Saru also warns about relationships between junior and senior employees.

“These relationships, even if they are consensual, can lead to conflict or problems in the workplace. On top of allegations of bias at work, personal conflict from outside Saru can spill into day-to-day working relationships, which may have a negative impact on the workplace”.

However, it does not prohibit it, stating that romances may occur if fully disclosed to management and relevant stakeholders.

And unlike Elton Jantjies and Zeenat Simjee, the documents state that the identities of those in relationships must remain entirely confidential.

“Saru, its employees, and all other relevant parties must ensure that the identities of the individuals involved in the relationship are kept confidential.

“All disclosures and communications related to the romantic or sexual relationship must be treated as confidential.”

In September last year, Elton Jantjies and Zeenat Simjee made headlines after an eyewitness spotted them at a guesthouse in Mbombela a month earlier.

While both initially denied news of a hotel tryst, Elton came clean about his affair with “Zee” in an interview with News24 in November.

Zeenat then claimed that it was a case of “mistaken identity.”

Elton has also separated from his wife, Iva Ristic, who previously claimed that Zeenat was “protected by SA Rugby.”

Speaking to The South African, Iva said of Zeenat: “She doesn’t care about people’s opinions as long as she stays at work. And I think she is very much protected by SA rugby.”

Iva also believes Zeenat’s “affair” with Elton Jantjies dates back to 2019: “There was NO internal procedure even to CHECK if there was a breach of contract from HER side”.

Iva added of her own communication with Zeenat – via Instagram DM – in the wake of the alleged affair: “I just asked her the question, ‘Do you have something to tell me?’. She read it but didn’t reply… then she blocked me. She never made an effort to talk to me after that until today”.

The Springboks WAG added: “She [Zeenat] only responds through her lawyer, who makes things so much worse for her… like the twin story.”
