Zinhle Jiyane, also known as DJ Zinhle, has had the daunting task of breaking the news of rapper AKA’s death to the daughter they share, Kairo Forbes.

But if that wasn’t enough to deal with, the muso is also facing criticism from music fans over her choice of clothing following his gruesome death.

AKA was shot and killed outside a Florida Road eatery in Durban on Friday evening.

DJ ZINHLE DRAGGED FOR WEARING PANTS TO AKA’S HOME

A day after his death, a clip of DJ Zinhle and her close friend DJ Oskido visiting the Bryanston home of AKA made its way onto social media.

But the mother-of-two faced condemnation from a group of social media users who chastised her for not wearing a skirt or covering her hair. Oskido also caught shade for wearing a hat and not a jacket.

The tradition forms part of Zulu culture during the period of mourning.

@Sthem056: “She’s wearing pants and not even covering her hair.”

@YourBoy_TK: “When you go comfort a family of a deceased, there’s a level of respect and humbleness that must always be maintained.”

@BayandaGumede: “I thought Zinhle was Zulu?”

@BighomieHydro: “It’s culture. Anyone has the right to lead their lives the way they want, but it’s a sign of respect and propitiating the deceased, family & that clan’s ancestors.”

Others clapped back, defending Zinhle…

@karabo_mapaila: “DJ Zinhle’s daughter just lost her father, and some people are worried about her wearing pants to go to AKAs home!”

@EvahM: “If she wore a dress, they would still shame her like she’s acting like a wife. The problem is we tweet amongst adults who reason like preschool kids.”

@__Refilwe__: “People impose their own cultures on others. I don’t understand why they can’t practice it without policing those who choose not to. Culture evolves over time, it was created by a mortal like you & me for reasons that made sense then. Respect is treatment, not attire!”

MOVING FORWARD AS A SINGLE MOM

In recent years AKA and DJ Zinhle shared a loving co-parenting approach to raising seven-year-old Kairo. In fact, every year, both AKA and Zinhle share social media posts dedicated to each other on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. They also supported each other through their various personal and business ventures.

And included in the blended family were their respective partners, Nadia Nakai and Bongani Mohosana

When asked for advice on how she co-parents, Zinhle said in a recent Instagram Live: “You have to get over yourself. Get over the guy. If you hate him, get over it. You have to do this thing for the children. Remove yourself and your things from the situation. Some people are difficult to co-parent with, but you need to be a few steps ahead”.
