Billionaire bigwigs: Ramaphosa vs Motsepe – who is wealthier?

Over the last few weeks, many South Africans have taken interest in the net worths of the country’s most prominent figures. No one is more prominent that the country’s leader president Cyril Ramaphosa and the first African man to be added onto the Forbes List Patrice Motsepe.

The two important figures undoubtedly have riches far beyond what many of us can even imagine having but exactly how much do they have?

Here’s how much king of ankole Ramaphosa is worth

President Cyril Ramaphosa is a businessman, politician and trade union leader. In the years leading up to his presidency, Ramaphosa has had a hand in mining, energy, banking and telecommunications.

According to Savanna News, Ramaphosa is also the former chairman of South Africa‘s largest telecommunications company, MTN Group.

At one point, the president was also the executive chairman of Shanduka Group which according to reports, was worth R20 billion by 2014.

Not stopping there, Ramaphosa paid for a 20-year master franchise agreement to run 145 McDonald’s restaurants in South Africa. He also started breeding — and recently auctioned off — ankole cows which are worth millions.

As of 2023, Ramaphosa is reportedly worth an estimated $450 million or just over R8 billion.

What about Patrice?

It’s no secret that Patrice Motsepe is loaded. Rappers have sung songs about the businessman who made most of his money from his blossoming mining company African Rainbow Minerals.

The billionaire also owns Mopani Copper Mines, a joint venture with Glencore.Motsepe is also the founder and Chairman of Ubuntu-Botho Investments.

His other sources of income come from property investment as well as being a shareholder in multiple companies. He is also the owner of Mamelodi Sundowns and the President of the Confederation of African Football.

Currently, Motsepe is worth an estimated $3.2 billion making him the clear winner of the big wig battle.
