Charlize Theron has seemingly blue-ticked backlash surrounding her comments about the Afrikaans language…and her South African followers are not happy!

The award-winning Hollywood actress – who hails from Benoni, Gauteng – posted on her social media platforms for the first time since courting controversy earlier this month.

And many have slammed the star’s “audacity” to ask her followers for cash donations to her charity.

In a social media post shared on Tuesday 29 November, the mother-of-two appealed to her followers to donate to her charity – the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project.

According to the screen star, the donations would fund the African Parks Network, an NGO dedicated to aiding and educating African communities.

Ultimately, the money would be used to purchase more bicycles needed for volunteers to “speak to folks in deeply rural and hard-to-reach areas about safe sex, HIV, STIs, unplanned pregnancy, preventing early childhood marriages, and more”

But Charlize’s heartfelt plea was largely met with scrutiny from her Afrikaans followers, who reminded her of her language faux pas.

In the comments section, many users trolled the actress for being “out of touch”. Others demanded an apology for her past comments.

Here’s what a few had to say:

Cora_klopper: “I will donate if they can speak Afrikaans”

Elunyboshoff: “Charlize is quite out of touch with South Africa and it’s embarrassing and really sad”

Christelve82: “Maybe the Afrikaans people can donate if we are good enough?”

Theresemorg1960: “Afrikaans is alive and here to stay, REMEMBER YOUR ROOTS CHARLIZE”

Henrietderu: “Maybe it’s time to apologise to the 44 Afrikaans speaking people in SA?”

Elunyboshoff: “Oh Tannie @charlizeafrica you still owe more than 44 people an apology. You’re quite out of touch with Afrikaans and South Africa and it’s embarrassing really. You disappoint us”

Earlier this month, Charlize Theron made headlines around the world for her comments about Afrikaans. The comments were made in an interview with the podcast SmartLess.

Chatting to podcast hosts Sean Hayes, Jason Bateman, and Will Arnett, Charlize spoke about learning English when she moved to the US at the age of 19 years old.

She then claimed that she had to learn English “from scratch”.

And it seems whilst Charlize still speaks Afrikaans to her mother Gerda, it’s not a language she hears often. In comments that irked her home country, she added: “There’s about 44 people still speaking it. It’s definitely a dying language; it’s not a very helpful language.”

Charlize has yet to respond to the controversy.
