Patrick Seleka, a prominent actor on the popular soapie Skeem Saam, posted an emotionally fraught video to his Instagram page on Monday evening, supported by a second apologetic post. Both uploads have since been deleted, but Seleka made a stark confession about his own ‘abusive behaviour’ towards his wife.

The silver screen star, who plays Katlego on SABC’s flagship programme, made a series of admissions about his own unacceptable conduct, revealing that his partner Mmabaneng was on anti-depressants ‘solely because of him’.

“The main reason my wife is going through her depression … I should say that all of it, is because of me. I am the reason she has been so depressed for so long and the one thing that’s the worst is I haven’t been there for her. I was emotionally and mentally abusive to her. I humbly apologise for everything that I have done.”

Patrick Seleka (Katlego) apologises for ‘turning his own wife into a joke’

The extensive video garnered thousands of reactions, as Patrick Seleka promised to amend his ways and do ‘whatever it takes’ to have Mmabaneng back in his life. The Skeem Saam cast member admitted that he ‘did not know’ where his wife was at this moment in time, but lives in hope that she can eventually forgive him.

Judging by his list of transgressions, that could be a rather tall order: Seleka has admitted to body shaming, verbally abusing, and even fighting Mmabaneng during his worst moments. His apology alone may not cut it.

“I’m sorry for body shaming you. I’m sorry for swearing at you. I’m sorry for comparing you. I’m sorry for badmouthing you. I’m sorry for screaming and shouting at you. I’m sorry for coming home drunk and just fighting you for no reason at all. I’m sorry for cheating countless times. I’m sorry for turning you into a joke.” | Patrick Seleka
