While Facebook and the other two apps — WhatsApp and Instagram, owned by Mark Zuckerberg were down on 4 October, the internet entrepreneur was sailing the high seas.
FACEBOOK, WHATSAPP AND INSTAGRAM GO DOWN FOR HOURS
On 4 October, three of the world’s most popular social media apps – Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were down for several hours. This created panic from users who rely on the app for business, work and social purposes.
“We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience!,” wrote the official WhatsApp page on Twitter.
APPS BEGIN TO WORK AGAIN.. HOURS LATER
Many flocked to Twitter to rant, rave and of course make jokes about the apps being down. It was about seven hours after their first post, WhatsApp let users know they are slowly starting to get the app running again.
“Apologies to everyone who hasn’t been able to use WhatsApp today. We’re starting to slowly and carefully get WhatsApp working again. Thank you so much for your patience. We will continue to keep you updated when we have more information to share,” wrote the official WhatsApp account on Twitter.
WHAT WAS MARK ZUCKERBERG DOING?
Mark Zuckeberg is the CEO of Facebook while WhatsApp and Instagram are both owned by Facebook. Therefore, Mark Zuckerberg is responsible for all three apps. So, where was the internet entrepreneur while the world was experiencing trouble with the social media apps?
He was sailing the high seas with his wife Priscilla Chan and their friends. The location is still unclear.

“Sailing with Priscilla and friends. Shot on ????,” wrote Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook.
Once Facebook users were able to get back online, they left a few comments under the CEO’s post.
“WhatsApp is malfunctioning in Germany, while you are on board,” wrote a Facebook user in the comments section.
“Mark Zuckerberg, messenger not working, where are you at?,” wrote another Facebook user.
“You here and everything shut behind officer,” wrote a Facebook user.
