In November 2021, Unathi Nkayi parted ways with Kaya 959 with the radio station highlighting that “certain incidents had occurred” which resulted in a “breakdown of trust”

Almost three months later, Nkayi has found a new home at Johannesburg-based radio station Star FM. In a statement sent to TshisaLive, Nkayi said she was looking forward to “a fresh new format of radio”.

In a statement sent to TshisaLive on Tuesday 15 February, Unathi Nkayi formally announced that she will be joining Star FM. This comes after the former Idols SA judge teased her return to radio in an Instagram video on Wednesday 9 February

Star FM is a youth-centred radio station based in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs.

The 43-year-old radio presenter will be hosting Star FM’s drive-time show, the All-Star Drive, between 15:00 and 18:00 with Justin Toerien.

Unathi’s first day on air will be on Tuesday 1 March.

Unathi shared that she was ready for the new chapter in her radio presenting career at the Johannesburg radio station.

“I am looking forward to a fresh new format of radio that I have never before attempted. To be able to speak to my community, from my community and for my community — priceless!”

“Being able to speak to a multicultural community is also something that I’m truly excited about because that’s the heart of radio — the heart of Joburg.”

Unathi was booted from Kaya 959 last year after “certain incidents had occured”. It was later revealed that Unathi was axed following an argument with the radio station’s drive-time host, Sizwe Dhlomo.

According to City Press, they were involved in a heated argument and Unathi accused Sizwe of being unprofessional and verbally abusive.

“Sizwe immediately asked HR to access the audio and listen to it because that would serve as evidence of what had been said,” said a source.

Dhlomo later denied being verbally abusing Unathi.
