On Monday, 8 May, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) denied having released a media statement informing locals that they would have to start paying for radio licences which did very little in making the organisation appear in a better light among Twitter users.

SABC DENIES RELEASING STATEMENT REGARDING RADIO LICENCES

Tweeps were not at the least convinced that the SABC knew nothing about the statement that has been doing the rounds online.

According to the statement, it was said that the SABC would implement car radio licences as part of the organisation’s drive to generate revenue.

However, the SABC has quickly distanced itself from the statement.

Taking to their Twitter page, the SABC said,

“The SABC would like to alert the public of a fake media statement which is circulating on various social media platforms titled “INTRODUCTION OF RADIO LICENCES AS PART SABC’S DRIVE TO GENERATE REVENUE…

“The SABC has not issued any media statement making such public pronouncements regarding licences for car radios.”

In 2021, speaking about TV licenses, Yolande van Biljon, SABC CFO was said to have shared that 76% of people in Mzansi that own TV sets were not bothering to pay their annual licence fee, News24 reported.
