Thuli Phongolo, Emtee’s wife: GBV activists support withdrawal

GBV activists Women For Change will support ‘survivors’ Thuli Phongolo and Nicole Chinsamy, partners of Maphorisa and Emtee respectively.

Gender-based activists Women For Change are supporting Thuli Phongolo and Nicole Chinsamy, despite their decisions to withdraw their assault charges against their partners; musos DJ Maphorisa and Emtee respectively.

Both women have made headlines in recent days after appearing in court against their alleged abuser. They’ve later withdrawn charges.

THULI PHONGOLO AND EMTEE’S WIFE WITHDRAW CHARGES

On Monday, DJ Maphorisa – real name Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe – appeared in the Randburg Magistrates Court on allegations he assaulted his partner Thuli Phongolo.

Maphorisa was arrested on Sunday at Thuli’s Sandton apartment after the alleged incident. According to Thuli, the DJ had grabbed her by the neck after an argument the night before.

Following his court appearance, Thuli signed a withdrawal statement and consented to Maphorisa being released on bail. According to TimesLive, Maphoria will appear in court again on 14 June, when he will make representations to the NPA in light of the withdrawal statement.

Meanwhile, Emtee’s wife last week officially dropped charges against the hitmaker – whose real name is Mthembeni Ndevu.. This, after he appeared at the Midrand Magistrates court over charges he allegedly assaulted her on Valentine’s Day.

In a clip that went viral, Nicole alleges Emteee assaulted her while she was heavily pregnant with her third child. 

According to her sworn statement, Nicole’s decision to withdraw was to “extend an olive branch” to her husband and father of her two children.

It read: “I forgave him for the sake of my kids”.

She added: “I was happy and satisfied with the investigation and the court proceedings up to this far.”

According to Sunday World, Emtee welcomed the decision. However, his legal representatives claimed that the rapper “vehemently denied” assaulting Nicole. They also lambasted him for being labelled a “woman basher.”

WOMEN FOR CHANGE SPEAKS

In a tweet, GBV activists Women For Change pledged to support both women.

It posted: “Thuli Phongolo and Nicole are not the first women to open a case against their alleged abuser and then withdraw it again.

“To withdraw a case does NOT mean that the assault did not happen! It’s the survivor’s decision if they want to go through the trauma and ‘aftermath’ again”.

Founder Sabrina Walter added to The South African: “We will stand – as always – with survivors of GBV.”
