‘Y’all still blame DJ Sbu?’: Tweeps on Zahara’s ‘drunk’ performance

Tweeps are coming to DJ Sbu’s defence following videos of Zahara’s performance at the Macufe Divas Show, which left much to be desired.

Zahara has set tongues wagging following her performance at the Macufe Lifestyle Divas Show in Bloemfontein on Friday 7 October.

A Twitter user by the name @shes_fair shared two clips of the musician singing her hits Ndiza and Phendula, leading tweeps to question her level of sobriety during the performance.

In the video clips, Zahara, who is on stage with a band and backing vocalists, performs some of her hit songs in a lacklustre manner. Half the time she sounds off-key, off-tune and somewhat emotional at times.

Another tweep shared a video of the Loliwe hitmaker performing her song Xa Bendingena mama.

The singer’s performance has led some tweeps to believe that she was drunk.

This is not the first time that Zahara’s live performance has been marred with drinking rumours.

In December 2021, she made headlines after clips of her performance left tweeps convinced she was singing under the influence.

Allegations about Zahara having a drinking problem go as far back as 2019 when a City Press article revealed that the musician spent a bleak Christmas in hospital for a month with liver disease due to her heavy drinking.

However, during her interview on MacG’s Podcast and Chill in September 2021, Zahara refuted all the drinking claims saying nobody has ever seen her with a drink in her hand. She told fans to rather focus on her music, which she said heals people.

Following Zahara’s performance at the Macufe Lifestyle Divas Show, some tweeps came to DJ Sbu’s defence after years of trolling and accusations for allegedly exploiting the singer.

The Loliwe hitmaker and the DJ have not been on good terms for years and it all started when she accused the Mofaya energy drink founder and Thembinkosi “TK” Nciza (who were her record label executives at her former label, TS Records) of exploiting her.

In 2019, Zahara claimed she did not receive royalties from her former bosses for her debut album Loliwe. The album sold over 500 000 copies and won Zahara several awards.

But, according to DJ Sbu, this is not the case. In July last year, he attempted to clear his name when he took to Twitter to write: “Ms Zahara’s money has always gone to her.”

In response, the Mgodi singer rubbished his claims and called him a liar.

“I haven’t been getting anything since I left the record label and I saw recently that my music was uploaded on digital platforms without me knowing, it means they sold my records to somebody and it means I need to get a cut for it.”

DJ Sbu and Zahara’s feud has been ongoing, with each party claiming the other is not being truthful.

Speaking to TshisaLive last year, DJ Sbu fired back at Zahara saying he “built” himself from “nothing”.

“I’ve never sought an opportunity to benefit from someone or try take somebody else’s money,” he added.

During Zahara’s hardships this year when she was on the brink of losing her townhouse in Roodeport, she again blamed her financial challenges on DJ Sbu and Nciza.

And with DJ Sbu’s new-found and enigmatic look, tweeps continue to troll the podcaster in Zahara’s name.
