A South African man with the handle @BathoChief on Twitter revealed on Saturday, 22 April that he’s the father of the man allegedly burned by Thabo Bester.

The father of the deceased tweeted: “The body that was burnt by Thabo Bester in prison was that of my son. Our own government is failing us. I am broken”.

Alleged Twitter accounts belonging to Newzroom journalist @LindA_MniSii and Sunday Times journalist @IamMzilikazi also revealed that police have identified the burned body of the man found in Thabo Bester’s cell.

“Police can confirm that the charred body found in cell 35 at Mangaung Correctional Centre has been identified following a direct match with the biological mother of the deceased. The family has been notified by the Investigating Officer. From @SAPoliceService.”

The father of the deceased also revealed that DNA tests were conducted to confirm the charred body is his son following questions by social media users: “Do you think I can make up this story? Your question is so mean”.

News24 reported on 12 April that authorities believe the burned body found in Thabo Bester’s cell was killed for the escape plot.

An autopsy revealed that the unknown man died from a blunt-force injury to the skull: “There was no smoke inhalation, soot, or burning in the airway or lungs, proving that he was dead prior to being burned in cell 35 on 3 May 2022”, adds the publication.

Phaladi Shuping, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) told News24 that the man died soon before being burned and this was the reason why the murder was added to the charges faced by two men (Magudumana’s father Zolile Sekeleni, and former G4S employee Senohe Matsoara).

The National Prosecuting Authority on Monday, 17 April however withdrew a murder charge against the father of celebrity doctor Nandipha Magudumana. EWN reported that Sekeleni was granted R10,000 bail in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court.

The man was reportedly murdered “upon or about” 3 May 2022, the day of the fire in the cell. A source in the intelligence community told News24 that it would be unlikely that the deceased was taken from a morgue because it would involve several people.

It is believed Bester’s lover Dr Nandipha Magudumana will also face murder charges.
