South African media personality Somizi Mhlongo topped the Twitter trends list after entertainment commentator Phil Mphela shared the viewership of Idols SA season 18 via a tweet on Wednesday 17 August.

‘IDOLS SA’ VIEWERSHIP REPORTEDLY DROPPED

Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela reported that Idols SA season 18 viewership is 744 000. Mphela claims that this is far from the viewership season 17 received. Take a look…

“TV: IdolsSA ratings slump. Season 18 debut month has been a lukewarm affair. The intro of new judges and the return of Somizi seems to have not lured disinterested viewers back,” he wrote.

“New season peaked at 744K viewers during July — far cry from seasons past debut,” he continued.

This comes after media personality Somizi Mhlongo was put on “time off” from the show due to abuse allegations made against him by his estranged husband Mohale Motaung. However, Somizi returned for season 18 but media personality Unathi Nkayi and Randall Abrahams did not. So, this may have affected the viewership.

TWEEPS DRAG SOMIZI

Twitter users then dragged Somizi following the reveal of the Idols SA viewership. Many seemed to have not been able to look past the abuse allegations. Take a look..

“I cannot stand watching that abusive convicted sex offender Somizi. Ugh everytime he comes on my TV, I change the channel,” wrote @SneKhumaloSA.

“I’m not feeling the judges and I’m struggling to look at Somizi the same way after the abuse,” wrote @BomkaziPoswayo.

“It’s a singing competition and not a single person on that judging Panel is a singer or makes their money from singing. So the whole thing is a gimmick. Also the allegations against Somizi can’t be overlooked just like that,” wrote @_lehare.

“Somizi, I checked out when I first came across the allegations round about this time last year,” wrote @lerrykins_.
